Preventive Dentistry includes periodic oral Examination, regular Cleaning, Fluoride, Oral and Systemic disease identification and referral to specialists when particular conditions are suspected. An important part of preventive dentistry performed in our office is educating patients about at-home care, nutrition, and smoking cessation. Dr. K and his staff explain proper brushing and flossing techniques. He may prescribe medications to help prevent dental disease. These include anti-inflammatory mouthwashes to prevent periodontal problems.
We also encourage prevention of oral diseases through proper hygiene and regular, twice yearly, checkups for professional cleaning and evaluation. The Prophylaxis, or the cleaning of the teeth, will help to remove accumulations of plaque and calculus.
Oral evaluation includes an examination of the teeth and soft tissue, using visual and tactile exams, Radiographic examination, and oral cancer screening. It includes techniques to diagnose periodontally or gum disease. Conditions in the oral cavity may be indicative of systemic diseases such as osteoporosis, diabetes, or cancer. Many studies have also shown that gum disease is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and preterm birth.
Preventive procedures we perform for children include the use of Fluoride applications. We offer dental Sealants to children’s teeth, forming a barrier between tooth crevasses and bacteria to help ward off dental decay. We also look for malocclusion and might recommend Braces, to correct a patient’s bad bite.
Preventive dental care should begin in infancy, within the first year of life before teeth first appear, and continue throughout life. Even before teeth erupt, parents can clean infants’ gums after feeding. Preventive care in adolescence includes brushing and flossing, as well as wearing custom-made mouth guards to protect the teeth during contact sports.
